A Tale That Is Told: Psalms 90

Psalm 90:

9-“For all our days are passed away in thy wrath:  we spend our years as a tale that is told.

12-So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

17-And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭90:12, 17‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Here we have the beginning of the fourth book of the Psalms called the Psalm of Moses (A Prayer of Moses, the man of God).

Skipping down to verse 9, (Our lives are as a story that has already been told) the sadness and shame of Israel’s plight and sin can be felt right here in black and white.

In the East, story tellers loved to share stories with the people. It was how they kept their heritage alive throughout the coming generations.

Imagine hearing the story of how God had brought them out of bondage from Egypt. Their lives were chock-full of God’s Promises! The excitement would be evident on the faces of the crowd.

As the narrator left them breathless, sitting on the edge of their seat, the scene would unfold. But instead of entering into those promises, they had chosen to go in the wrong direction instead.

I can imagine how many times they had each hitten the “replay” button in their own minds. Their failure a shadow, always before them in the wilderness, instead of the land of flowing milk and honey.

Their lives had become a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.

My favorite of the whole chapter is — Verse 12– “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”

We tell ourselves that as long as we are healthy, we will live forever in this body. But life is fleeting. We need wisdom more than ever to use the time we’ve been given wisely.

On up to the ending verses, Moses pleads with God to show them happiness for as many days as He has shown them trouble.

Afterward, he beseeches God to bless them with kindness and to help the work of their hands.

Have you ever wondered how things may have turned out differently if only the Israelites had stepped forward in courage and faith, rather than shrinking back in fear and disbelief? I know I have! Have you ever found yourself in the same predicament? How might things have turned out if you had chosen the path of the Israelites, one of disbelief? Or chosen one of faith?

Let’s Pray. Dear Jesus, we are living in desperate times. Help us to hide your Word in our heart that we might not sin against you. That we may stand in the evil days. Teach us to count our days well. Give us a heart that follows after you and thinks as you think. Let your beauty flow over us and bless the work of our hands. Help us to choose faith over disbelief. In Jesus Name we pray. Amen!
